"The project represents a continuation of our research supported by the Grant Agency. It is based on characterization of interactions between bird schistosomes and their vertebrate hosts. Two model species of parasites (T. szidati and T. regenti) will beused in a comparative study. The first part of the project will be centred on poorly known migrations of these parasites through the lungs, intestinal wall, spinal cord and nasal mucosa of birds. Because of changing tissues on their migration, the secondaim of the project should be focused on characterization of parasite proteinases, participating in tissue lysis and digestion (including food degradation). These enzymes will be studied by biochemical and molecular techniques. Because the infections areaccompanied by inflammatory reactions around the parasites, cell infiltrates will be studied in detail by histological and histochemical methods.
