The proposed project will deal with sperm inhibition and activation factors including pollutants in two groups of model species of chondrostean (Chondrostei) andteleostean (Teleostei) fish. Intact and demembranated spermatozoa will be used for the determination of motility, ATP consumption, of acrosome enzyme activity and integrity. The state of acrosome will be assessed by means of monoclonal antibodies againstsuperficial- and intra-acrosomal proteins of mammalian spermatozoa, as well as by means of specific monoclonal antibodies against fish spermatozoa proteins. The first group will consist of chondrostean fish, the sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) and thepaddlefish (Polyodon spathula), both utilising active acrosome in the course of fertilization.
