This is important for the pig industry to produce healthier (low fat content in carcass) and consumer acceptable (2 - 3% intramuscular fat) pork and for the pig as a model animal for study of human obesity. Fat deposition is quantitative trait influenced by genetic (quantitative trait loci - QTLs) and environmental factors. The whole genome QTL mapping and association studies performed by us and other groups in Meishan x Western breed crosses revealed QTLs for fat accretion on chromosome X (SW259 - SW1943), on q arm of the chromosome 2 (RETN) and on chromosome 13 (ADIPOQ). We will perform partial cloning of selected genes from homologous human chromosome regions and their linkage mapping in USDA MARC backcross pedigree.
