"The aim of this study is to identify the gene coding for a new cellular receptor (tv-cs), which is responsible for the sensitivity of cells to Avian leukosis viruses of subgroup C (ALV-C), and to locate its position on the chicken microchromosome. In thenext step, we will characterize the alleles of receptor genes from chickens resistant to ALV subgroup C and A (tv-cr a tv-ar). An integral part of this study will also be identification of the so far unknown genome regions of subgroup C viruses that are essential for induction of the wasting disease in chickens. For this purpose, recombinants between ALV-C and the subgroup A virus (ALV-A), which does not induce the wasting disease, will be prepared and tested in vivo. We also anticipate that the study of interactions between the receptor molecule and the C-envelope glycoprotein can reveal a new pathway leading to cell death.
