"The evolution of sexual reproduction as a strategy for maintaining genetic variation represents a central problem in biology. Sex chromosomes, which often control sexuality, have evolved independently many times during evolution in both animals and plants. Here we propose to identify and characterize new genes linked to sex chromosomes in a plant species with recently evolved sex-chromosome systems, the dioecious white campion Silene latifolia. For this purpose, we have developed a new unique method based on hybridization of cDNA libraries on immobilized flow-sorted X chromosomes. In parallel, we use S. latifolia BAC library to identify new sex linked genes.\u00A0Studies on these genes will reveal whether the evolutionary processes concerning sex-chromosome evolution observed so far (e.g., dosage compensation, degeneration of genes in non-recombining chromosomes, gene transfer from autosomes to sex chromosomes) are of a general character.
