"One of the most important functions of the cortical cytoplasm of a plant cell (the cytoplasm underlying the plasma membrane) is to transduce various environmental stimuli into the interior of the cell. These signals might determine the polarity of cell growth that is realised by processes of oriented cellular expansion. The control of these processes is tightly connected with the function of cortical actin filaments (AFs) and microtubules (MTs). Surprisingly, little is known about the cooperation of AFs and MTs and about its contribution to processes mentioned above. Thus, in this project, the role of the mutual interaction between AFs and MTs during various phases of directional cell growth under normal and stress conditions will be studied. For this purpose, unique cell lines carrying fluorescent protein-fusion proteins will be produced, enabeling us the study of the dynamics of both cytoskeletons during the directional cell growth.
