Biological, biochemical and molecular genetics methods will be applied to the screening of novel molecules of this type and characterization of their potential for the suppression of coleopteran and lepidopteran pests. We will study the insecticidal proteins influencing the alimentary tract on three levels: (i) the insect digestive enzymes as a target for protein inhibitors with defensive function in plants, (ii) the gut peritrophic membrane as a target for plant defensive chitinases and chitin-binding proteins, and (iii) the midgut cells as a target for Bt-toxins.
