"There is increasing evidence from the literature that at least some algae are able to produce plant growth regulators and antimicrobial compounds. Both groups of compounds can be considered as %22valuable products%22 for the agriculture and medicine. Withrespect to this we propose: (1) to collect new strains, optimise their growth in microtiter plates and characterise their growth parameters, (2) to develop simple screening system for analyses of phytohormone production of different algae clones andstrains, (3) to characterise precisely endogenous levels of different plant hormone metabolites by very sophisticated techniques, (4) to isolate and identify new algae growth regulators, and (5) to test biological activities of algal extracts indifferent assay (cytotoxicity, PGR bioassays, antiviral and antimicrobial activities).
