However, this technology is very inefficient in many food crops such as potato (Solanum tuberosum). The main difficulty preventing a more widespread application of microspore embryogenesis is that the initial events that control the developmental switch from gametophyte to embryo are poorly understood. This proposal aims to elucidate the initial signals and mechanisms thacontrol embryogenic induction in the model plant tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), and use these results for study of microspore embryogenesis in potato. Our recent work revealed that gametophytic development in tobacco microspores and pollen is controlled bythe coordinated reorganisation of unique cytoskeletal arrays; we will now analyse their structures and function during the induction of embryogenesis.
