"Studies of the evolutionary divergence of homologous gene pairs on mammalian sex chromosomes suggest that recombination between the X chromosome and non-recombining part of the Y chromosome has been successively suppressed during Y chromosome evolution. There is a correlation between the locations of X-linked genes and their DNA sequence divergence from their Y-linked homologues (%22evolutionary strata%22). The %22strata%22 may indicate a series of Y inversions disrupting X-Y recombination but the progressive arrest of recombination can be also controlled by special type of genes. To further understand the evolution of suppressed recombination between X and Y chromosomes, data from other systems may be helpful. The plant genus Silene has become a model for the study of sex chromosome evolution, since the sex chromosomes evolved recently in this genus.
