"Infection with barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) and barley yellow mosaic virus complex (BaYMV) is a serious threat to the cultivation of barley and breeding for resistance is necessary. Marker-assisted selection should replace the costly and time consuming field tests and speed up the breeding process. There is now at disposal PCR diagnostic marker of BYDV resistance gene Yd2, used in RICP Prague successfully in spring barley. It is, however, necessary to develop markers for resistance genes detected in winter barley and markers of genes conferring moderate resistance detected in the cultivars Malvaz and Atribut registered in Czech Republic. Genetic analyses in hybrid populations of crosses and molecular techniques will be used for the detection of effective genes that will be incorporated in modern barley genotypes.
