"The project is the first attempt to debate from a comparative perspective major parameters of urban life in early modern East-Central Europe. The argumentation revolves around the idea that urban societies were confronted with phenomena that are perceived by historians as symptoms or agents of political, economic and social transformations on the way from the Middle Age to Modernity. They covered the early modern urbanization, ethnic, religiously and culturally diversified migration, Reformation, early modern state building and structural shifts in the European economy. These processes affected cities in two ways: First, they challenged the integrity of urban societies by supporting their confessional, ethnic and social fragmentation.
