"In invertebrates, lectin-saccharide interactions play an important role in regulation of defense mechanisms as well as in communication between different factors involved in defense reactions. Proposed project represents a logical continuation of two projects granted by the GA ER that were devoted to characterization of two cytokine-like factors in the coelomic fluid of annelids (CCF-1 and CMF). Although, there is no homology in amino acid or gene sequences with known cytokines, both factors have analogous biological activity to TNF (cytolytic, trypanolytic, opsonizing) or IL-1/2 (mitogenic) and both exert a lectin-like activity. The main aim of the proposed project is to better characterize the mechanisms underlying the cytolytic and trypanolytiproperties of CCF-1. Moreover, the identification of the CCF-1 and CMF domains involved in the interaction with saccharides will be envisaged.
