Innate resistance to infection with intracellular bacterial pathogens is substantionally influenced by genetic background of the host.The genetic control is expressed phenotypically as the ability of molecules and cells of host`s immune system to restrict the rate of intracellular growth of microbe in the early phase of infection. Resistant allele of the Bcg/Lsh/Ity gene has been implicated in innate resistance to infection with taxonomically unrelated microorganisms like Mycobacteria spp., Salmonella typhimurium and Leishmania donovani. The expression of this gene is associated with a wide range of pleiotropic effects within immune system but the specific role of the gene has not been sufficiently defined yet.
