"Adaptive or compensatory mutations allow survival of antibiotic resistant bacteria in competition with more fit sensitive ones and thus make it difficult to solve the problem of resistance just by limiting the overuse of drugs. The main aim of the projec"@en . "1"^^ . . "During the last decade there has been an alarming increase in the appearance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria as a result of an increased use of antibiotics both in humans and animals. It was observed quite often that when the antibiotic is removed fromthe environment the resistant population does not tend to revert back to sensitivity and thus better fitness. But, instead, after growth for many generations it starts to accumulate secondary adaptive mutations, which improve the fitness of the organismsand sometimes also restores lost virulence, and the most important, the antibiotic resistance stays. The aim of this project is to study these types of mutations in selected strains of E. coli and Mycobacteria, especially among ribosomal and ribosomeassociated proteins. Beside the classical type of batch cultivation we will use continuous cultivation technologies to get closer to the low growth rates and controlled size of population as are observed in populations of opportunistic pathogens in human"@en .
