Severe hyperbilirubinemia such as neonatal jaundicemay lead to irreversible damage of central nervous system. Due to the absence of microbial flora capable of reducing bilirubin in the neonatal gastrointestinal tract (GIT) a substantial part of intestinal bilirubin may be reabsorbed.
