"The aim of the project is to investigate the processing of complex acoustical signals such as vocalization in the neuronal circuits of the auditory cortex in the rat and guinea pig. Single- unit or multiple-unit activity will be recorded extracellularly with microelectrodes in anaesthetized or awake animals, and the interaction of adjacent units will be analyzed by the aim of crosscorrelation technique. The results will be systematically compared with the results obtained in previous studies performed under similar conditions in the inferior colliculus and medial geniculate body. As a part of the project, the delineation of several auditory cortical areas will be studied by using cytochrome oxidase and NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry and calbindin and parvalbumin immunocytochemistry. These techniques will also be employed in the assessment of changes in the neurochemistry of the central auditory syst\u00E9m after acoustic overstimulation and peripheral lesions and during aging.
