The aim of the present project is to induce seizures in immature 12-day-old rats by i.c.v. infusion of DL-homocysteic acid (an endogenous excitatory amino acid ) and to examine mechanisms underlying brain damage associated with seizure activity and to elucidate conditions leading to neuroprotection (especially to study the anticonvulsant and neuroprotective effect of metabotropic glutamatereceptor subtype selective agonists and/or antagonists and free radical scavengers). Studies will be performed not only during seizures, but also during selected periods of survival.
