"The aim of the proposed project is to contribute to a better understanding of information processes performed by neurons and small neuronal nets by using theoretical and computational approaches. We will be primarily concerned with mechanisms that are crucial for information transfer from input activation to output signaling. The primary tool will be mathematical analysis based on the theory of stochastic processes and differential equations, supplemented by computer simulations and comparison with experimental data.1) The first steps of chemosensory transduction will be studied in application to olfactory systems and mainly under periodic stimulation. The spiking activity of the first- and second-order sensory neurons will be analyzed. Comparison of these results with available experimental data will be examined.2) The spatial characteristics of neurons will be included in the models via compartmental and cable theory and the role of spatial arrangement will be investigated.
