"Age-related changes in the function of blood-brain barrier are associated predominantly with altered properties of capillary endothelial cell membrane and can contribute to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease. At the present time, great attention concentrates on problems with Alzheimer disease therapy and a possible administration of proteolytic enzymes is suggested. The aim of the project is to determine changes in the transport function (carrier-mediated choline uptake) and in the barrier function (enzyme gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase) of capillaries isolated from rat and human brain tissue under normal and pathological aging and to evaluate the effects of some plant proteolytic enzymes (bromelain and papain) on the above-mentioned functions of of blood-brain barrier. In vivo application of proteases to young and old male Wistar rats per rectum and in vitro application to capillaries isolated from autoptic brain tissue of patients with Alzheimer disease and from age-matched contro"@en . .
