"The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) plays a key role in the regulation of arterial blood pressure (BP) and in the development of hypertension. The main peptide of the RAS is angiotensin II (ANG II) acting via two main receptors, namely AT1 and AT2 receptors. Most %22classical%22 biological effects of ANG II (vasoconstriction, increased renal sodium reabsorption) are mediated through activation of AT1 receptors. The function of AT2 receptors has not been known until recently. Recent studies have suggested that activation of AT2 receptors causes renal and peripheral vasodilatation and a decrease in BP that are mediated by nitric oxide generation and that activation of AT2 receptors physiologically antagonizes the AT1 receptor-mediated hypertensinogenic action of ANG II.
