SE in experimental animals results in extensive brain damage; in the past, attention was focused on limbic structures. Recent data demonstrated neuronal loss in extralimbic structures. Our preliminary data demonstrated that striatopallidal complex is among damaged structures. This complex is involved in regulation of motor activity and also in integrative functions. Therefore we decided to analyze damage of this system after SE elicited by lithium-pilocarpine treatment in developing rats. SE will be behaviorally and electroencephalographically characterized. We will study extension, distribution and time course of neurodegeneration in striatopallidal complex in five age groups of rats. To characterize degenerating (FluoroJade B-positive) neurons double-staining with immunohistochemical methods focused mainly on inhibitory GABAergic neurons will be used.
