The existence of tooth atavisms and of vestigial ancestral tooth primordia implies that there might be a natural substrate responsive to the controlled stimulation of tooth regeneration in situ in mammals. Tooth development will be analysed in normal, mutant and knockout mice and compared with some other species (e.g. human, crocodile). We shall verify the hypothesis: Vestigial tooth primordia of ancestors represent integral component of normal odontogenesis; their suppressed developmental potentiality can be stimulated under pathological or experimental conditions. The project will bring important knowledge about role of specific genes/gene products in control of organ morphogenesis; ontogeny and phylogeny of the dentition in mammals; and ethiopathogenesis of inborn defects. We shall have tested whether the suppressed tooth-forming potentiality in vestiges can be stimulated under pathological or experimental conditions leading to origin of an autonomous tooth.
