"The main goal of the project is to study angiogenesis and vascular remodelling of capillary segments of human placental terminal villi. Angiogenesis in the course of capillary segments will be revealed by visualization of angiogenic %22hot spots%22 using immunohistochemical demonstration of nestin occuring in postmitotic endothelial cells. Further, we will test the hypothesis that the arrangement and dimensions of capillaries in terminal villi meet the conditions of %22plasma skimming%22. For this purpose, we will develop efficient methods for evaluation of the spatial distribution of angiogenic processes in a capillary network as well as stereological methods for estimation of geometrical characteristics of capillaries, especially their length, diameter, and cross-sectional area.
