"The group of LAMMER kinases defined by Drosophila Darkener of apricot (Doa) locus is ubiquitously conserved eukaryotic protein kinase family implicated in regulating the cellular choice between continued proliferation and differentiation. The mutations in Doa gene are responsible for complex phenotype with malformed and blind eyes, defects in embryogenesis and early neurogenesis, segmental patterning and appendage morphogenesis. Doa alleles are also dominant suppressors of mutations induced by the retrotransposon copia and related mobile genetic elements. The high degree of structural and functional conservation in this family suggests that these kinases control similar, if not identical, processes in diverged species. Of the three homologues in humans, CLK2, maps to a chromosomal location incriminated in a high percentage of spontaneous breast cancers.
