"The project is aimed at finding the causes of the renal disease (extensive interstitial fibrosis of the kidney without glomerular lesions) assigned as %22Chinese herbs nephropathy%22 (CHN). This renal disease was generated by the addition of chinese plantscontaining carcinogenic compounds (aristolochic acids) to the slimming regimen. Identification of the enzyme systems, which participate in biotransformation (activation and detoxication) of aristolochic acids in human and finding whether these enzymescan generate the different responses of individual patients to these natural toxicants will be performed. Namely, whether metabolic polymorfism of specific enzymes catalyzing biotransformation reactions of aristolochic acids can be the factor of individual susceptibility to the risk of toxic effects and carcinogenesis caused by these toxicants.
