Saps degrade a number of tissue proteins and thus facilitate invasion of Candida spp. Although protease production has been observed during experimental infection, the in vivo regulation and the role in pathogenicity of the individual SAP genes remains unclear. Genome of C. albicans contains also the gene encoding vacuolar aspartic protease which is poorly characterized. To determine possible functions of Sap 9, 10, and vacuolar protease, we will express these enzymes in Pichia pastoris and E. coli.
