"Nuclear hormone receptors (NHRs) are transcription factors that regulate metabolism and development of metazoan species. Some members of NHR superfamily are regulated by ligands, small hydrophobic molecules such as retinoids, farnesoids, and steroids while other receptors, for which the ligands are not known yet, are called orphan receptors. In Caenorhabditis elegans, this gene family is unexpectedly large and comprises more than 280 genes. This number far exceeds NHRs found in mammalian or Drosophila melanogaster genomes. We have characterized the developmental function of CHR3 (NHR-23), a NHR that is related to Drosophila DHR3 and mammalian ROR/RZR. In search for NHRs that regulate development in C. elegans, we have uncovered functions oftwo other receptors: NHR-40 and NHR-60. Both receptors fall into a subgroup of C. elegans NHRs, characterized by a P-box CNGCKT.
