"Many different signalling pathways that monitor the dynamic state of the cell converge on p53. The ability of p53 to process these signals and respond by triggering cell cycle arrest and/or cell death by apoptosis is crucial for prevention of tumour development. P53 is mutated in more than 50% of cancer cases. One of the future strategies for treatment of cancer is based on drug-mediated reactivation of mutant p53 protein. Our project is focused towards biological, biochemical and biophysical studies of p53 and its homologues and their interactions with DNA to understand better multiple functions of these proteins in a cell. The role of post-translational modifications of p53 protein and the response of cells carrying different mutant forms of p53 to DNA damaging agents as well as to other types of cellular stress will be investigated. The research will also involve biochemical and biophysical analysis of interactions of p53 and its homologues with supercoiled DNA. Our study will help to"@en . "0"^^ . .
