"The proposed project is devoted to determine the role on spatial differentiated sink strength related to canopy depth in physiological processes responses to long-term influence of elevated CO2. The project idea is based on the hypothesis that on the stand-scale the level of response to elevated CO2, occurrence and magnitude of acclimation depression of photosynthetic activity and related changes in assimilates production/allocation are distinctly spatially differentiated according to the sink strength. Moreover, the compensatory effects of elevated CO2 on photosynthesis related to the low irradiance in shaded parts of the stand is expected. Thus, the whole stand response to elevated CO2 will be quite different to that of the level of the individual tree. The project solution is based on the long-term investigation of the Norway spruce stand enclosed in the artificial minispheres with the ambient and elevated CO2.
