The signal is received by receptors, processed in the photoperiodic clock and stored in the 'memory' link. The 'message' is processed further in the neuroendocrine system, to affect then the target tissues. The output produces (1) swich from development do dormancy and (2) changes in body composition, leading to stress tolerance. The first events of the chain might control also the circadian rhythms which could thus become an indirect 'marker' of the function of regulatory switches inside the 'black box'. To understand the mechanisms of interaction within this complicated regulation complex, an interdisciplinary research project employing current methods of ecophysiology, endocrinology, chronobiology, and analytical biochemistry is suggested.
