Impact of protozoan grazing on genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of bacterial assemblages will be studied at the beginning in laboratory systems with increasing complexity and then in pelagic environments byusing a combination of two modern approaches: fluorescent rRna-targeted oligonucleotide probes and image analysis. The project should address the question whether frequently observed changes in morphology and physiology of bacteria under protozoan grazing pressure are linked only to adaptive mechanisms of a respective bacterial strain (i.e. phenotypic plasticity) or whether protozoan bacterivory causes the real shifts in genotypic diversity of bacterial assemblages.
