"The project brought evidence that tooth development is controlled by identical molecular signals regardless of their development in the ectoderm or endoderm. Such teeth are homologous structures irrespective of different embryonic origin. Four papers were published in journals with good impact factor. "Teeth are one of the vertebrate key innovations, but their evolutionary origins are still a matter of debate. It is believed that teeth evolved either "outside-in" from skin (ectodermal), or "inside-out" from internal (endodermal) denticles. The dilemma, however, cannot be decided based on fossils and the embryogenetic studies did not provide a satisfactory answer as well. Our previous study demonstrated quite convincingly that oral teeth can be derived from either ecto- or endoderm, and even from both sources, and that all such teeth look otherwise identical. In the proposed project, we will analyze the gene expressions appearing during morphogenesis of these teeth, will compare the patterns of teeth development in axolotl and bichir in order to\u00A0 test a hypothesis that all teeth are produced by identical developmental-genetic mechanisms. Our study will address a question whether the developmental module producing teeth evolved only once and teeth of different clades are homologous."@en . .
