In spite of this, taxonomic understanding of this monocot family at the worldwide scale is unsatisfactory and a modern global monograph is missing. High taxonomic diversity, occurrence of local forms within extensive ranges of species, seasonal and environmental phenotypic plasticity, polyploidy/aneuploidy and frequent hybridization make Potamogetonaceae the most difficult family of aquatic plants from taxonomic and evolutionary perspective. We therefore aim at a global taxonomic monograph, supplemented by phylogenetic reconstruction of species relationships. The monograph will provide full taxonomic information from family to species level. Relationships at the generic and infrageneric levels will be addressed by multigene sequencing. A wide range of approaches used in contemporary plant systematics will be employed: traditional taxonomy, anatomical studies, karyology, cultivation experiments and DNA analyses."@en .
