Two key physiological mechanisms will be probed in this project: (1) The hypothesis will be tested that the entrance into diapause followed by cold-acclimation switch the metabolism from energy production to cryoprotectant biosynthesis. The acclimatory changes in transcription of genes and activities of enzymes involved in polyol biosynthesis\u00A0and in other enzymes of glycolytic pathway will be followed in the bug, Pyrrhocoris apterus. (2) A detailed HPLC/MS analysis of lipidic composition in biological membranes in organs of two closely related fly species, Drosophila melanogaster and Chymomyza costata, which differ in their diapause and overwintering strategies, will be performed. Adjustments of lipidic composition during the Rapid Cold-Hardening and the Winter Cold-Hardening responses will be compared in an attempt to search for general adaptive mechanisms for coping with cold."@en .
