"The proposed project focuses on 1) epipelic pennate diatom diversity, distribution and their ecological preferences and 2) determination of the relationship between morphological and cytological variation, reproduction behaviour and mating compatibility and genetic population diversity in selected diatoms, particularly critical species complexes as Navicula cryptocephala agg., Sellaphora pupula agg., Pinnularia gibba agg. and others. Conventional methods (sediment sampling, diatom identification and counting, ecological variables measurement) will be combined with modern approaches (diatom clone cultivation, mating experiments, DAPI staining, confocal microscopy, SEM, geometric morphometrics, CANOCO, molecular methods). This knowledge will allow us to test whether segregate species are ecologically differentiated and hence whether there is potential for improving water quality monitoring, which is due to %22cryptic or semicryptic species%22 existence strongly limited."@en .
