"Parasites of genus Leishmania are responsible for considerable human and animal mortality and morbidity throughout the world. The vectors are females of sand flies (Diptera: Phlebotominae), whose saliva contains a mixture of antihaemostatic and immunomodulatory molecules and enhance the initial phase of Leishmania infection. In addition, parasite-derived factors, like promastigote-secreted gel, as well as the immune response of the vertebrate host participate in this process. The proposed project is aimed at different molecules involved in Leishmania transmission and in parasite-vector-host interaction. The study can be summarized into four main aims: characterization of the cytokine-binding activities in sand fly saliva, description of the effect of hyaluronidase on leishmania infection, \u00A0evaluation of the role of promastigote-secreted gel in natural models and detailed study of the dynamics of antibody response (IgG and IgE) in hosts experimentally bitten by sand flies.
