Hieracium, Compositae) belongs to taxonomically most intricate groups of vascular plants. It is comprised of prevailing polyploid apomicts and rarely occurring diploid sexuals; complicated pattern ofmorphological variation is, among others, most probably caused by past (and rarely also recent) hybridization events. The Carpathians are extremely rich in Hieracium taxa (many of them are endemic); it is, among others, due to high geological andgeomorphological diversity, geographical position between Balkan mountains, the Alps, and the Sudeten Mts., changes in vegetation cover during the glacial and postglacial periods. Nevertheless, complete up-to-date account of Hieracium in the Carpathiansis still lacking. The planned monograph will include all distinguished mountain taxa; each species (subspecies) entry will begin with accepted Latin name, synonyms and citations of type material.
