"It is generally known now that among many processes that have been suggested for a penetration of the solar wind plasma to the magnetosphere, reconnection of the interplanetary and Earth magnetic fields plays a dominant role. Although the process itself is limited to a small diffusion region, it forms the whole magnetosphere. We plan to take advantage of several multi-spacecraft missions (Cluster, THEMIS, Interball) and investigate reconnection at the magnetopause and its consequences. We would like to define (1) a relative weight of antiparallel and component reconnection for a formation of different magnetopause layers (dayside and flank LLBL, outer cusp, mantle) and magnetospheric regions (cusp proper, plasma sheet, PSBL); and (2) to contribute to present understanding of a role of processes like Kelvin-Helmholtz instability or diffusion to the rate of the solar wind entry into the magnetosphere.
