"Although the presence of the solar wind plasma in the magnetosphere is well known for many years, the possible mechanisms of its penetration through the magnetopause are still under debate. We plan to analyze observations of all ISTP spacecraft in order to find a relative weight of the suggested processes (magnetic merging, diffusion, impulsive penetration, surface waves, etc.) on this process. The analysis will start with investigation of the propagation of solar wind disturbances and modifications of the upstream parameters at the bow shock and in the magnetosheath. We plan to apply both statistical approach and case studies for investigation of the magnetopause itself. The statistics will be used for determination of the global magnetopause shape and changes of this shape with upstream conditions, whereas case studies involving all available spacecraft allow us to study the magnetopause structure, mechanisms of its formation and consequences for the global magnetopause morphology.
