One of the open problems in Be-star research is to find out the ultimate cause of slow cyclic changes in relative intensity of the violet and red parts of the double emission lines of some Be stars, called V/R changes.These variations usually continue for only several cycles lasting a few years and disappear, to reappear again after a long interval of quiescence. There is a rather general consensus that they indicate some kind of violation of the axial symmetry of theenvelopes but the exact mechanism of their formation is still subject to discussion.
