"Until recently, studies of earthquake mechanism were limited as a default to determination of parameters of a double couple which is the body force equivalent of a shear slip along a planar fault. With the advancement of methods taking into account more information from seismic records than polarities of first arrivals and with their presently widespread use (inversion of amplitudes, amplitude ratios, waveforms), more details about the source can be retrieved. It results in the contemporary effort to identify departures of earthquake mechanism from the double couple, which may be indication of fundamentally different physical processes. Non-double couple components are detected at shallow earthquakes from volcanic and geothermal regions, events induced by mining, at some of deep-focus earthquakes etc. However, determination of non-DC components may be severely biased by noise contamination of the data, mislocation of the hypocentre and mismodeling of the medium.
