"A syntenic group of genes conserved in human, mouse, Drosophila, and C. elegans genomes was discovered during positional cloning of the Hybrid sterility 1 gene on mouse chromosome 17 (Trachtulec et al., Genomics 44: 1-7(1997)). This is the first highly conserved linkage of homologous genes without any apparent common function on one chromosome in each species. The aim of the proposed project is to analyse the members of this group, localize new members, and try to find reasons for its conservation. Weplan to reach this goal in two steps. First, we will map new genes to mouse chromosome 17 by the help of human genes from the syntenic region, by transcript isolation from the Hst1 region and by searching in databases. In the second step, which is dependent on the results of the first step, we plan to analyze orientation of closely linked syntenic genes, their chromatine loops (domains) and expression pattern, and to determine their isochores.
