"Genetics provides causal evidence for roles of genes in vivo and thus enlightens principles of development and functioning of live organisms. Owing to decades of efforts by a number of scientists, the fruitfly D. melanogaster and the nematode C. elegans have become the key genetic models of current biology. One of the recent challenges is to expand the reverse genetic techniques devised for Drosophila and C. elegans to other invertebrate species, relevant for comparative phylogenetic studies or for their economic or medical importance. Genetic studies in such species will increase our understanding of general evolutionary-developmental mechanisms. Genetic manipulations are also believed to enable future management of human disease vectors, such as mosquitoes, ticks or parasitic nematodes, and of crop pests. In the proposed project we will utilize\u00A0a newly emerging insect genetic model, the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum.
