Other protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) with various substrate specificity take part in later stages of activation. The extent of tyrosine phosphorylation of signaling molecules not only reflects the activity ofPTKs, but represents the net result of the opposing effects of PTKs and tyrosine phosphatases (PTPases). Although it is expected that the number of PTPases is similar to that of PTKs, only a very limited number of PTPases has been identified in mastcells.
