"Recently considerable efforts have gone into genomic studies, including the Human Genome Project. The ultimate goal of these studies is to define the genome and to identify the most important genes functional in normal and pathological pathways. Fast andinexpensive methods are now necessary to study nucleotide sequences in individuals and to detect mutations related to specific diseases. It is believed that electrochemical sensors of the DNA hybridization represent one of the most promising solution ofthis problem. This project is oriented to basic research in electrochemistry of DNA, peptides and proteins necessary for the progress in the development of such sensors and for the increase of the sensitivity of peptide and protein determinationnecessary in studies of the proteome. Electrochemical studies will concentrate on catalytic reactions (some of them recently discovered in the proposers' laboratories) and interactions of these compounds with different surfaces.
