"Cell-to-cell communication is a crucial cell function. Some cells secrete hormones, mitogens, etc., that cause target cells to change their gene transcription, physiology or differentiation. Plasma membrane receptors are vital for this process. Among thereceptors that promote the entry of agents lethal for the cell are killer toxin receptors of yeasts. The objective of the project is to determine the properties (specificity, selectivity, cross-reactivity) of the S. cerevisiae plasma membrane receptors for killer toxin and the mechanism of their interaction with the toxin(s), in particular: (1) specificity of S. cerevisiae plasma membrane receptors for various killer toxins (membrane lipid molecules or specialised proteinaceous entities serving as receptors), (2) the sensitivity of receptor action to mutations or other interventions, (3) the membrane receptor population pattern (a single type with variable specificity or several subpopulations with different specificities).
