Although substantial effort has been devoted in recent years to understanding polymer blends and block copolymers, both in the bulk and in dilute solution, relatively little attention has been paid to systems with a minor content of diluent. Such systems are, however, very important from both the fundamental science and practical application perspectives. A small amount of a third component can significantly alter both the phase diagram and the dynamic properties of binary polymer mixtures, sometimes in counter-intuitive ways. At the same time, many practical polymer mixtures contain such a third component, as plasticizer, compatibilizer, processing aid, antioxidant, or pigment.
