"Amine oxidases (AO) catalyse the breakdown of polyamines (especially of putrescine and cadaverine). AOs pla a significant role in the biosynthesis of the cell wall. Apart from other functions, polyamines also regulate cellular proliferation and are classified as plant hormones. The cytokinin oxidases (CO) catalyse the breakdown of plant hormones (cytokinins) and influence cell cycles. Both enzymes can also be used for bioanalytical purposes (biosensors) to determine quanties of polyamines and cytokininsin biological samples. The starting phase of the project involves the screening of Fabaceae plants for AO activity and of other plants for COs activity (eg in poplar leaves), the eleboration of new methods of CO activity determination, the isolation, pu rification, characterization at molecular level, AO and CO crystallization from rich plant stores and protein chain sequencing from the N-terminus.
