"The work performed within the project considerably widened the knowledge about the solvation of gaseous ions ranging from simple organic model systems to metal ions and transition metal compounds as might be documented by the significant number of publications in impacted journals which resulted from this project. "In the project, the microhydration of mono-, bi-, and trivalent metal cations, [M(H2O)n]z+, will be investigated. As far as the metals M are concerned, mostly main-group metals and a few selected transition metals (groups 11 and 12) will be investigated.A major interest concerns the role of counterions X- for the metal-ion solvation, e.g. a comparison of [M(H2O)n]z+ and [MX(H2O)n](z-1)+, where X- stands for a halide or a pseudohalide. Likewise, the role of bivalent counterions (e.g. carbonate or sulfate) will be addressed in detail. In the second phase of the project, the role of aggregation processes at elevated metal concentrations will be assessed, which will also provide insight into the reactivity of ligated metal clusters. Once more, the counterion is expected to play a major role in clustering phenomena.
